Open Arms Shelter for Homeless MenRPC provides overnight stays for homeless men from the Open Arms Shelter, on six or seven Saturdays per year. See the Calendar for exact dates. RPC volunteers are asked to set-up cots and bedding for about twenty men late Saturday afternoon, tend the desk area for general assistance, and sleep in the library overnight. Other RPC volunteers are asked to wash the bedding afterward. Friendly contact with the men themselves is up to each volunteer. Arriving at 10:30 p.m., some men enjoy talking for a few minutes, while most go right to bed. While these homeless men may seem disenfranchised by personal errors or societal barriers, they are in need of non-judgmental Christian support, are truly trying to get their lives in order; they are gentlemanly, quiet, and respectful. Overnight duties are often carried out by RPC volunteers, confirmation class volunteers and parents, or by Boy Scouts and their fathers. Recently we have had difficulty finding volunteers, particularly overnight, and we are in serious need of help. RPC parishioners young and old have found that these overnights offer a valuable Christian learning experience and a tangible opportunity to help in need. To volunteer, call Peter Donahue at 921-0195 or sign up at the Reception Desk.
