Seventh & Eighth Grade Sunday School

The following is what RPC's pre-Confirmation Class of 2009 (current 8th graders) and the Class of 2010 (current 7th graders) are studying.  There are currently 63 registered class members.  Please join us on most Sundays (see RPC 2007-2008 Church School Schedule below for exact dates that we do and don't meet) downstairs in the Undercroft, first door on your right.  If you cannot make it, you can make sure you don't miss anything by looking at the topic and Scripture that was discussed each Sunday.  Students are encouraged to practice the spiritual disciplines of prayer and Bible reading.  With their parent's support, students are encouraged to bring their own Bibles to class, participate in group discussions and do about fifteen minutes of homework each week.  We hope to better prepare seventh and eighth grade students for their ninth grade Confirmation experience.   Towards that end, we are trying to cover some Bible basics.  To see what we hope to do with the children, see the 50 Things Everyone Should Know About the Bible, below.

Sunday, 11/18/07, Teaching: Mr. Clyatt

What we studied: Matthew 25: 31-41.  This is the passage where Jesus tells the people to feed the hungry, to care for the sick, and to visit people in prison.  They ask him when they did this and he says, "in as much as you have done it unto the least of these my brethren, you have done it unto me".  It's a central passage and vitally important to any one's understanding of Christ's teachings and their role in being God's hands and helpers here on earth.

Also, for our Afghanistan initiative, we had a lot of donations and sent off a huge box of hats and gloves this week.  As we go into the Christmas season we hope to work with the Children's Collective to buy gifts for 700 needy kids in Westchester for Christmas.  We also talked about ShoreTown Heros.  Students are asked to make themselves available to help serve a meal or decorate for Christmas at the Boys' Home in New Rochelle or other areas where our friends identify a need and an opportunity for kids to help kids.

We studied this prayer: "Lord  help us learn to love you and serve you.  Help us learn to love and serve each other.  Let us be your ears to listen to those in need, Let us be your hands to serve those who are hungry.  Let us be your arms to lift those who have stumbled.  Amen."  Why did Jesus ask us to feed the hungry?  Why doesn't God feed them 'Godself'.?  God has us here to be his hands and arms and eyes and ears to do God's work here on earth.  This is a sacred trust, an opportunity to show our thanks to God, not a big chore or obligation.  Serving is a natural response to our sense of gratitude and blessing.  But we need to make it a habit, we need to get in the habit of doing it and just as we need to learn to pray, we need to learn how to serve.  See this Thanksgiving differently this year.
